Midtown has become an unofficial but widely-used name in Bend for the blocks roughly between Pilot Butte and the Bend Parkway north of NE Franklin Ave. On city neighborhood association maps a similar area is designated as the Orchard District.
Midtown lots are largely residential and vary in size and character. Many homes in the neighborhood are substantial and well-established, with mature landscaping and tree-shaded lawns. Thoroughfares near the west and south borders of the district provide a diverse selection of shops, restaurants and services.
City planners are working on a master plan for redevelopment of the NE 3rd St. corridor in the west part of Midtown that will alter traffic flow and modify zoning to create a mixed-use neighborhood with improved aesthetics, pedestrian and bicycle-friendly streets and an urban atmosphere.
Pilot Butte State Park, a Bend landmark, surrounds a 480-ft cinder cone with access to the top via trails and a road that is open part of the year. The viewpoint provides an unobstructed 360-degree look at the surrounding territory.
Hollinshead park is a former working ranch with several outbuildings preserved including Hollinshead Barn, a popular site for weddings and other functions. A community garden and renovated sharecropper’s house, now a museum, are also featured. The park covers 16.5 acres.
The nature and location of Midtown encourages home improvement projects as well as infill construction of new homes. One such development, Orchard Hill, is composed of townhomes and single-family homes on the site of a former fruit orchard. It is being built by Palmer Homes and marketed by Harcourts The Garner Group Real Estate.
