The southwestern sector of Bend, extending from downtown, is bisected by the Deschutes River. To the far west lie the Broken Top gated golf community and, just outside the city limits, Tetherow. The latter combines luxury homes, golf, overnight lodging and associated resort amenities.
Close in, the area encompasses the Old Mill District, Les Schwab Amphitheater, Century Center and two jewels in the local park system, Farewell Bend and Riverbend parks. A placid stretch of the river is amenable to floating and paddleboarding.
Between the river and the Bend Parkway, new neighborhoods carpeted the landscape during the building boom of the early 2000s, prompting construction of two new elementary schools. Values are increasing as the economy improves. Property near the Deschutes River has proven to be the most desirable. Older homes to the east are concentrated in established neighborhoods with winding streets and stands of mature pines.
