From the various weather changes to the chirping of birds, we know Spring is in full-swing here in the High Desert. For a lot of us here in Central Oregon, the season can’t come soon enough. Snowstorms, ice dams, slushy roads and sketchy roundabouts have worn us down. Seeing the crocus pop through the soil is both encouraging and exciting, for homeowners especially. The season is also the perfect time to consider some tips for Spring cleaning your home.
Winter is the season for being cozy, snuggling by the fireplace and hitting the sled hill. Our homes have acquired dust, clutter and piles of projects we plan to “get to” when the weather clears. The time is now, Spring cleaning is up to bat and we’ve got some great tips to help you battle those dusty corners. Cleaning your home can be fun if you have good music playing and an organized list of to-do’s.
MAKE A LIST
Proper planning can make this job much easier. Make a list of the rooms you want to clean and try to stick to that list as much as possible. Prioritize the rooms that need a little extra love, like bathrooms and the kitchen. Cleaning, especially a “deep clean” can be an overwhelming task. Set goals you can attain and allow yourself enough time to achieve those goals. Most people agree that a deep Spring cleaning is a time-consuming project that can take days to complete. Prepare accordingly and buy all your cleaning supplies prior to getting started. And don’t forget about the outside of your home. Spring cleaning does apply to the exterior of your home, including the yard. Find a warm weather weekend in the forecast and plan for a property clean-up.
CLEAN ROOM BY ROOM
Part of the satisfaction of Spring cleaning is seeing the before and after. Using your list, start with one room and cross everything off your list before moving onto the next room. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and a place to retreat to when you get overwhelmed with cleaning. A great tip is to start from the top of a room and work your way down. Mopping the floors before you dust isn’t recommended since chances are some of the dust you stir up will settle onto the floors. Top to bottom is a great approach, leaving the floors for last.
PURGE STUFF YOU NO LONGER USE
Simplify, declutter and donate those items that you no longer use. The Spring is a great time to get those stagnant items out of your home and into the hands of people that can use them. Consider donating to a local charity, like Saving Grace or the City Thrift resale store here in Bend, Oregon. Minimizing the spaces in your home will help make cleaning it much easier. You won’t spend as much time trying to work around the clutter, instead you can focus on the deep clean at hand.
